During the winter, your skin has to put up with sub-zero temperatures, while in the summer, it’s up against the sun or sea water. That’s why it’s important to protect your skin all year-round! If you tend to use the same skincare products during the winter and summer, it’s time to change up your beauty routine! Here are a few daily actions you can take that will make your skin shine this summer.

Add a plant-based oil to your beauty routine

Is your skin feeling dehydrated after a day of fun in the sun? Believe it or not, plant-based oil is your best ally! You can simply rub some onto your clean face, or mix a few drops in with your day or night moisturizer. If you have oily skin, opt for a lighter oil, such as jojoba oil. Suffer from dryness? Go with a more nourishing oil, such as olive or argon oil. And if you have sensitive skin, choose something gentler, like almond oil; it soothes irritations and makes your face glow.

Hair care: plant-based oil to the rescue!

It’s not just your skin that can benefit from plant-based oil! Days spent by the pool or at the beach can be harsh on your locks, too. Plant-based oil is great for undoing the damage caused by the sun, chlorine, and sea water! Castor and avocado oil boast nourishing properties that help repair damaged hair. Simply add a few drops to your ends after shampooing.

Adopt a refreshing face mist

You’ve seen them in-store, but don’t really understand their necessity? Well, refreshing face mists are a summertime must! A cross between a toner and thermal water, these hybrid products give your skin that coveted glow thanks to their tonifying, refreshing, and softening properties. Don’t forget to throw a bottle into your beach bag, along with your sunscreen!

How to use a face mist

To be used morning or night. Start by cleansing your face, then, holding the bottle about 30 centimeters from your face, lightly mist all over. Follow with your moisturizer, which will absorb better on damp skin. You can also use your mist throughout the day, for a quick post-workout refresh or to calm any irritations caused by the sun.

Clean your face with a natural makeup remover

If you think makeup removers are only good for removing makeup, think again! During the summer months, they’re also great for removing sunscreen residue, seeing as most sunscreens are designed to withstand water and perspiration. We suggest opting for natural products that don’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a chemical compound that can cause your skin to dry out.

The different types of natural makeup removers

Micellar water If you have oily skin, opt for micellar water. This type of product, which is named after the micelles it contains, gently eliminates impurities, all while helping your skin maintain a balanced pH. Oil makeup remover If you have combination skin, opt for an oil makeup remover. We recommend going with plant-based oils, seeing as mineral oils can block your pores and cause pimples. Reusable wipes Gentle on the skin and good for the planet, these wipes are a great alternative to disposable makeup wipes! This product, combined with a natural makeup remover, deep-cleans your face. Most are made from cotton or bamboo fibres and are easy to wash with a bar of soap.

Use a gentle exfoliant

Before heading out in the sun, make sure you exfoliate! This step helps eliminate dead skin, for an even, all-over tan. Plus, it’ll help reduce your risk of developing pigment spots due to UV rays. We recommend using a product that contains argan or hemp oil, as such oils cleanse your skin without disrupting its balance. Have sensitive skin? Opt for a gentle exfoliant made with aloe vera—perfect for hydrating and soothing reactive skin.

Eliminate odours with natural deodorants

During the summer months, it’s normal to sweat more! To eliminate any unpleasant odours, try a natural deodorant. These products don’t contain parabens or phthalates—two substances that are believed to be endocrine disruptors. Some natural deodorant manufacturers use natural, organic, or plant-based ingredients, such as coconut oil and essential oils. Others prefer using active ingredients such as baking soda to help neutralize the body’s acidity. Other products on the market are made with bee’s wax, which moisturizes and protects the skin. No matter the season, your skin deserves a beauty routine that reflects the weather. This summer, give yourself some TLC . . . from your head all the way down to your toes!
