The changing seasons, particularly between summer ae toall, are a time to adjust and prepare our bodies.

The gloomier weather and colder temperatures can cause discomfort, such as cold, cough, dry skin, fatigue or a runny nose in young children.

In my home, as you know, I always turn to natural supplements and therapies. Below, I have included our fall essentials that can be used by kids and adults alike to fight germs and strengthen their immune systems.

1. Echinacea

This flower, commonly found in summer gardens, is actually a medicinal plant that can be taken in tablet or liquid form. It helps prevent the flu and reduces the symptoms and severity of a cold. It also sooths sore throats and is suitable for everyone, even pregnant women.

2. Vitamin D3

Also known as cholecalciferol, this vitamin is available in tablet or liquid form. I particularly like the spray version, which is easy to give to children. Vitamin D is naturally derived from the sun and is essential for maintaining health. Ideally, we should aim to get more sun exposure, especially during the winter months. Since this isn’t always possible, it’s a good idea to take a vitamin D supplement.

3. Probiotics

With the arrival of fall, nature slows down and we turn inward, cook more comfort foods and eat less fresh produce. You may experience minor discomfort or slow digestion, which is why it’s a good idea to give your digestive system a boost with probiotics. For babies, a powdered formula is available that mixes well with milk, while older children can take their probiotics in liquid or tablet form. You can also eat foods that naturally contain probiotics, like kombucha, sauerkraut, yogurt and nut-based cheeses.

4. Homeopathic medicine (Coryzalia syrup and tablets)

Uh oh… someone in your family has a cold. What can you do? Take out your homeopathic remedy kit, a natural pharmacy! This type of kit is handy to have around and is always effective when it comes to relieving runny noses or soothing sore throats.

5. A repairing balm for dry skin

I always keep balm in my purse, in my car and at home. I look for products that are good for the entire family to soothe rashes and relieve dry skin. My current favourite is Bébé Hibou’s Soothing Repairing Balm:

  • Moisturizing care specifically formulated for infants, children and adults with extremely dry, sensitive and inflamed skin
  • Enriched with vitamin E (an active agent known for its repairing, hydrating and soothing properties) and glycerin
